Giulia Rae “O”, her first release on Riforma, is a two-track EP emblematic of her approach to composition. Working by contrast, the sound materializes a dialogue between algorithmically sequenced synthetic melodies and hazy field recordings recalling a sense of place.

A detailed and immersive sound design, able to re-create environments in which we feel we once have been. Echoing emotional hallucinations, the melodies and textures wrap around the listener, and a sense of falling deeply pervades us. “2023” is atomised and totally reinterpreted by Elif Gülin Soğuksu, where each piece returns feverish, compressed in time, the voice marks a new pattern in the composition. “regolo” was displaced and degraded by going through the procedural machines of C3 S R crew:


“The rework of the song REGOLO is an attempt of attrition, made possible by combining 2
processes:

1) Space Attrition
Thanks to an internal path of auxiliary sends, to which the different stems have been separately sent, the sound content has been organized to be virtually reproduced by 4 different objects (Tiny Phone - Small Synth - Toy Speaker - Tape Cassette) which are placed in 4 environments varying in size and acoustic characteristics (Wooden Studio - Ancient Church - Boom Room - Archaic Courtroom).
The final effect is therefore an attempt to create an "inner space" in which the song expresses itself differently from the original. In an expanded space, organized in the stereophonic image, the elements follow one another in an almost pictorial choreography, approaching, moving away, drawing dynamic trajectories, moving in the 4 environments on the three spatial axes: height, width and depth.

2) Attrition of Playback Medium
After having constructed and performed the inner space of the piece, the material was reviewed on a "prepared" Revox B77 MKI Tape Recorder which have further modified its quality, degrading it also from a material point of view. The limited ability of the tape to faithfully reproduce the spectrum gives opacity to the piece, degrades it, ruins it and distances it further from the original precision. from REGOLO to LOGORE…”


Giulia Rae (she/her) is a sound artist currently based in Brussels. Grounded in the field of creative coding, her careful touch on sound embraces the human-machine interaction to craft otherworldly sonic environments characterized by digital granularity and enveloping bass. Rae was fundamentally nourished by the Italian underground electronic music scene, later expanding her path internationally after studying at the Institute of Sonology of The Hague (NL). She presents her acousmatic works and performs throughout Europe while releasing on labels such as Søvn Records, Ovaal, Light Item, Intersezioni, Solium Records. She has appeared as a selector on different radios such as Kiosk Radio, Eos Radio, Radio Sygma, Radio Raheem. In parallel, she works as a composer and sound designer for theater, dance, video, and other multidisciplinary projects.


Elif Gülin Soğuksu is a composer, sound artist and performer born in Istanbul, currently based in Den Haag pursuing her masters at the Institute of Sonology. Her research is revolving around the notion of voice, both literal and metaphorical, she is influenced by the abstraction of the voice as a concept. She is mainly exploring the compositional use of voice in electroacoustic music, algorithmic composition, and live performance.
