about

The Maria Dolens Bell in Rovereto is a monument created from the bronze of the cannons used in World War I. It was first cast in 1924 and completed in 1964, after another war and hesitations about its sound. In remembrance of those who have lost their lives in war, it chimes 100 times per day. Weighing more than 22 tons, it stands at a height of 3.36 meters with a diameter of 3.21 meters, delivering the note B-flat.

It was made to represent the human lives lost in World War I, however it was manufactured during a period that would later end up being among the darkest in history. Today, it would be unimaginable to recover the iron of the weapons involved in contemporary wars – those are connective, ephemeral, sonic and propagandistic; data-led, genetic, cultural and infrastructural...

As Jung writes in Psychology And Alchemy from his research dating back to that same period:

“The fire chilled to air, and the air became the great wind of Zarathustra and caused an inflation of consciousness which, it seems, can be damped down only by the most terrible catastrophe to civilization, another deluge let loose by the gods upon inhospitable humanity.
An inflated consciousness is always egocentric and conscious of nothing but its own existence. It is incapable of learning from the past, incapable of understanding contemporary events, and incapable of drawing right conclusions about the future. It is hypnotized by itself and therefore cannot be argued with. It inevitably dooms itself to calamities that must strike it dead. Paradoxically enough, inflation is a regression of consciousness into unconsciousness.“

The Maria Dolens bell has a hyperstitious sound, remembering the victims of the present future. Every day it tolls 100 strokes. Every second a person is killed by patriarchy, colonialism and financial realism. At the time of writing this text, January 2024, at terribly variable time intervals a Gazan person is shot by the corrupt fury of the state of Israel under the eyes of the self-proclaimed gatekeeper nations of the definition of human. And every second, at terribly variable intervals, an ecosystem is extinguished at the hands of the same principle, entailing an inflation in consciousness.

The Maria Dolens bell might appear as the ultimate representation of an alchemical process of fusing traumatic experience into an object that develops a very high sound pressure. The more-than-human communities of the Rovereto Valley have experienced this sound pressure at every sunset since 1964. The entire valley is compelled to witness the call of the memory of the human being, a call that irreversibly impacts ecosystem flows. Each chime performs human hostility, concealing itself under the guise of Necessary Memory. As if a symbol of memory is enough to convert the biases of human communities involved in the devastation of the planet, redeeming them.

In this composition, Kinked deconstructs the experience of listening to the Maria Dolens bell of Rovereto by making use of a main sample arranged in three different ways to narrate the extraction of the raw materials intended to form the bell (between those: human beings); the moment of it fusion and the first listening experienced by a digital consciousness in the ages to follow.
The last track features a sample of the chimes recorded by Kinked himself in 2022, which here represents a discontinuous and rhizomatic temporal flow, of contrast to the human timeline.
Within Fire Chilled To Air, And Air Became The Great Wind voices and languages become thermal functions, while more material gestures, sweating tears, address the humanx listener as a creator deity, helpless before the despair created by their inflation of consciousness.
